The Hapag-Lloyd Berlin Express comes to Hamburg for the christening

The Hapag-Lloyd Berlin Express comes to Hamburg for the christening
With a length of 400 meters and a width of 61 meters, the "Berlin Express" is one of the largest container ships in the world. With the "Berlin Express" and eleven sister ships, Hapag-Lloyd is launching the new Hamburg Express class onto the market. In total, the ships can accommodate around 23,600 TEU. This also includes 1,500 connections for reefer containers. A special feature is its propulsion system. The Hamburg Express class is equipped with dual-fuel technology. The ships can therefore already run on LNG, but are also ready to use future, non-fossil fuels such as e-methane. The large container ship is powered by a MAN main engine with an output of over 75,000 KW. This enables it to reach a cruising speed of 22 knots. The “Berlin Express” of the traditional Hamburg shipping company Hapag-Lloyd operates on the FE 3 scheduled service between the Far East and Northern Europe together with the shipping companies ONE, HMM and Yang Ming. The “Berlin Express” was built by the Hanwha Ocean shipyard in South Korea. On October 2, 2023, the megacarrier was officially christened “Berlin Express” by Elke Büdenbender, the wife of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, at the Container Terminal Burchardkai in Hamburg. The “Berlin Express” will then leave the port for the Far East under the German flag with its home port of Hamburg and is expected back in Hamburg in approximately 84 days.
